INS-40710: Cluster name:string does not start with a letter.

INS-40710: Cluster name:string does not start with a letter.

Cause: The cluster name did not start with a letter.
Action: Provide a value for the cluster name that starts with a letter

I wanted to upgrade the Oracle CRS from 11gR1 to 11gR2. I started Grid Infrastructure installer, but I got this error on “Grid Infrastructure SCAN information” screen.

It was not able to get the cluster name & throwing this error.

Actually, it read this information from OCR disk.

My OCR (11gR1) disk owner was user ora11gr1

/dev/vx/rdsk/ocrvotedg# ls -al ocrvol
crw——- 1 ora11gr1 dba 132 0x00b3b0 Feb 5 03:48 ocrvol

I was trying to upgrade CRS using user ora11gr2. As this user could not read the information from OCR, it was throwing this error.

So I changed the permission as following (i.e added rw to group dba)

/dev/vx/rdsk/ocrvotedg# chmod g+rw ocrvol
/dev/vx/rdsk/ocrvotedg# ls -al ocrvol
crw-rw—- 1 ora11gr1 dba 132 0x00b3b0 Feb 5 03:48 ocrvol

Now it could read the OCR disk and populate the cluster name.
