dbca failure when creating database on ASM (ORA-01503, ORA-15001, ORA-01034)

dbca -silent -createDatabase -templateName General_Purpose.dbc -gdbName oradb -sid oradb -sysPassword oracle -systemPassword oracle -datafileDestination +DATA -storageType ASM -asmSysPassword oracle

Database creation failed, with following error stack

ORA-01503: CREATE CONTROLFILE failed
ORA-01565: error in identifying file ‘+DATA/oradb/system01.dbf’
ORA-17503: ksfdopn:2 Failed to open file +DATA/oradb/system01.dbf
ORA-15001: diskgroup “DATA” does not exist or is not mounted
ORA-15055: unable to connect to ASM instance
ORA-01034: ORACLE not available

DBCA_PROGRESS : 100%

Findings:

1. ASM instance was up & running
2. DATA diskgroup was mounted

Solution:

ASM password file was missing & DBCA was not able to connect to ASM instance

cd $ORACLE_HOME/dbs
export ORACLE_SID=+ASM
orapwd file=orapw$ORACLE_SID password=oracle entries=5

This will create a file orapw+ASM

Stop start ASM Instance. DBCA will work now.
